Name nerds rejoice! Finally, four months after Mother’s Day, the U.S. Social Security Administration has decided to release the latest batch (2019) of baby name data!
I’m going to summarize the data in just two posts this year — one for girls, one for boys. Let’s start with the ladies…

Yalitza was influenced by Roma (2018) actress Yalitza Aparicio, and Mazikeen comes from the character Mazikeen Smith in the TV series Lucifer.
Here are the girl names that debuted most impressively in the 2019 data:
Adeya, debuted with 22 baby girls
Kayslin, 20
Malaynah, 18
Chevel, 17
Kulture, 17
Kaavia, 15
Sakani, 15
Ahveya, 14
Akyli, 14
Jhazelle, 14
Some explanations…
Adeya, Kulture and Kaavia are all celebrity babies: Adeya is the daughter of Kehlani, Kulture is the daughter of Cardi B and Offset, and Kaavia is the daughter of Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade.
Kayslin and Chevel come from two contestants (Kayslin Victoria and Chevel Shepherd) on The Voice.
Malaynah is a young female rapper (who earned a coveted IG repost from the aforementioned Cardi B in 2018).
Sakani was likely inspired by Sekani, the name of a character (a little boy) in the 2018 film The Hate U Give.
Akyli must come from Akyli Maze, one of the children of Joe Lee and Alena Maze — YouTube influencers who create content under the name MAZELEE. (The baby name Mazelee debuted last year as well — not surprising at all, given how close it is to the popular Paisley.)
The girl names that saw the largest decreases in usage in terms of absolute numbers of babies were…
Emma, decreased by 1,655 babies
Isabella, -1,211
Alexa, -1,069
Mila, -845
Madison, -794
Avery, -775
Victoria, -767
Addison, -743
Abigail, -742
Elizabeth, -716
The girl name that saw the largest decrease in usage in terms of relative numbers of babies was Anifer (-86%), and the girl name that saw the steepest drop off the list was Marionna (from 21 babies in 2018 to fewer than 5 in 2019).
If you can explain any of the rises (or drops), please leave a comment!
But first: Happy birthday, Elvis Presley! (He would have been 85 today.)
So now, think back to 2019. Think of all the pop culture that caught your attention. Think of movies, music, TV shows, social media, sports, video games, news, politics, products, and so forth.
Which of these things had an influence on U.S. baby names last year, do you think? Which baby names will see higher usage (or appear for the very first time) in the 2019 data thanks to 2019 pop culture?
Here are some names to start with:
Adeya – from celebrity baby Adeya (born in March to Kehlani)
Alita – from the movie Alita: Battle Angel
Archie – from royal baby Archie (born in May to Harry & Meghan)
Billie – from singer Billie Eilish
Brixton – from the movie Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw
Deckard – from the movie Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

Sulwe – from the book Sulwe by Lupita Nyong’o
Wick – from the movie John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum
A few names from the 2018 game (Kamala? Kelleth? Sanni? Marsai?) might still be applicable as well.
What other names should we add to the list? Let me know by commenting below. Please don’t forget to mention the pop culture influence!
I’ll be posting the game results in May of 2020, a few days after the SSA releases the 2019 baby name data. If you don’t want to miss the results post, just subscribe to NBN!
If you’re on the hunt for baby names with a numerological value of 6, you’re in luck! Because today’s post features hundreds of 6-names.
Before we get to the names, though — how do we know that they’re “sixes” in numerology?
Turning names into numbers
Here’s how to calculate the numerological value of a name.
First, for each letter, come up with a number to represent that letter’s position in the alphabet. (Letter A would be number 1, letter B would be number 2, and so forth.) Then, add all the numbers together. If the sum has two or more digits, add the digits together recursively until the result is a single digit. That single digit is the name’s numerological value.
For instance, the letters in the name Weston correspond to the numbers 23, 5, 19, 20, 15, and 14. The sum of these numbers is 96. The digits of 96 added together equal 15, and the digits of 15 added together equal 6 — the numerological value of Weston.
Baby names with a value of 6
Below you’ll find the most popular 6-names per gender, according to the latest U.S. baby name data. I’ve further sub-categorized them by total sums — just in case any of those larger numbers are significant to anyone.
6
The letters in the following baby names add up to 6.
Girl name (6)
Boy names (6)
Ada
Abba, Baba
6 via 15
The letters in the following baby names add up to 15, which reduces to six (1+5=6).
Girl names (6 via 15)
Boy names (6 via 15)
Aida, Alaa, Adia, An, Ama
Jad, Aadi, Gabe, An, Ej
6 via 24
The letters in the following baby names add up to 24, which reduces to six (2+4=6).
There’s no definitive answer, unfortunately, because various numerological systems exist, and each one has its own interpretation of the number six. That said, if we look at a couple of modern numerology/astrology websites, we see 6 being described as “harmonious,” “loving,” “stable,” “compassionate,” and “responsible.”
We can also look at associations, which are a bit more concrete. Here are some things that are associated with the number 6:
Snowflake (six-fold symmetry)
Beehive (six-sided cells)
Guitar (6 strings)
Football (6 points for a touchdown)
Ice hockey (6 players per side, including the goalie)
Cube (six faces)
Six degrees of separation (the idea that all people are six or fewer social connections away from one other)
What does the number 6 mean to you? What are your strongest associations with the number?
P.S. To see names with other numerological values, check out the posts for the numbers one, two, three, four, five, seven, eight, and nine.
Baton Rogue-based rapper Kevin Gates and his wife Dreka have two children, daughter Islah (pronounced ees-lah) and son Khaza. Both names have been featured in Kevin’s music recently. As a result, both names have also seen a relatively steep rise in usage recently.
In May of 2015, Gates released the song “Khaza” [vid]. The same year, the baby name Khaza was the 2nd-highest-rising boy name of 2015 (after Rhydian). Usage was largely in the South.
2017: 72 baby boys (and 10 baby girls) named Khaza
13 in LA, 9 in GA, 7 in TX, 6 in TN, 5 in AL (56%)
2016: 77 baby boys (and 6 baby girls) named Khaza
18 in TX, 11 in LA, 7 in AL, 6 in GA, 6 in FL, 6 in NC, 5 in TN (77%)
2015: 34 baby boys named Khaza
8 in TX, 6 in LA (41%)
2014: 6 baby boys named Khaza [debut]
2013: unlisted
I’m not certain where the name comes from, but my wild guess is that it’s based on the Quranic word khaza’in, which means “treasures” in Arabic. (Gates is a practicing Muslim.)
In January of 2016, after releasing various mixtapes and singles, Gates finally put out his first studio album, Islah. Spin called it “the most-balanced Kevin Gates project to date.” The same year, the baby name Islah was the 2nd-highest-rising girl name of 2016 (after Kehlani).
2017: 58 baby girls named Islah
9 in FL, 8 in TX
2016: 48 baby girls (and 5 baby boys) named Islah
8 in CA, 8 in TX
2015: 8 baby girls named Islah
2014: unlisted
2013: unlisted
In this case I can tell you precisely where the name came from, because Gates talked about it in several interviews. Here’s how he defined the album title for HotNewHipHop in late 2015:
“To reform, to improve, to make better. And I believe that’s what my first daughter did to me, so I named my first album after my first daughter. Because it improved me, it made me better.”
And that’s exactly what the Arabic word islah means: “to improve, to better, to put something into a better position.”
Which baby name do you like more, Khaza or Islah? Would you use either one?
