How popular is the baby name Anahi in the United States right now? How popular was it historically? Use the popularity graph and data table below to find out! Plus, see all the blog posts that mention the name Anahi.
The graph will take a few moments to load. (Don't worry, it shouldn't take 9 months!) If it's taking too long, try reloading the page.
A couple of weeks ago, Rachel asked a great question: “I wonder which names are the most Canadian? That is, which have the greatest popularity differentials between Canada and the US?”
In this post and the next, we’ll try to come up with lists of both the “most Canadian” and the “most American” baby names using two different methods.
First, we’ll look at the most popular names that appeared in only one set of data (either Canada or the U.S.) in 2022.
Second, we’ll look at the names that appeared in both sets of data, focusing on how proportionally popular each name was in each place. For the girl names below, I calculated the proportions by dividing each name’s U.S. usage by the total number of girls born in the U.S. last year (1,784,437) and each name’s Canadian usage by the total number of girls born Canada last year (170,916).
Top Canada-only girl names
The 2022 Canadian data included 270 girl names that were not in the U.S. data. Below are the 10+ most popular Canada-only girl names.

Top U.S.-only girl names
The 2022 U.S. data included 14,319 girl names that were not in the Canadian data. Below are the 10 most popular U.S.-only girl names.
Similar to the way the Canada-only list featured names used by French speakers, this U.S.-only list includes quite a few names used by Spanish speakers.

Of course, this analysis is necessarily a bit lopsided: Canada has fewer people than the U.S. does, and also releases a relatively limited set of baby name data.
Looking for a pair of baby names that are mirror images of one another? If so, check out this long list of palindromic name pairings.
What’s a palindrome? It’s a word or phrase that can be read the same way in either direction, i.e., both forwards and backwards. For instance, the words “level,” “refer” and “pop” are all palindromes.
Each of the hundreds of pairings below features two names that contain the same sequence of letters, just written in opposite directions. (Nearly all of these names were collected from the SSA’s huge database of U.S. baby names.)
It’s also possible to come up with your own palindromic pairs by flipping traditional names to create brand new names, just as Ramon and Helen were flipped to create the modern names Nomar and Neleh.
If you’re on the hunt for baby names with a numerological value of 6, you’re in luck! Because today’s post features hundreds of 6-names.
Before we get to the names, though — how do we know that they’re “sixes” in numerology?
Turning names into numbers
Here’s how to calculate the numerological value of a name.
First, for each letter, come up with a number to represent that letter’s position in the alphabet. (Letter A would be number 1, letter B would be number 2, and so forth.) Then, add all the numbers together. If the sum has two or more digits, add the digits together recursively until the result is a single digit. That single digit is the name’s numerological value.
For instance, the letters in the name Weston correspond to the numbers 23, 5, 19, 20, 15, and 14. The sum of these numbers is 96. The digits of 96 added together equal 15, and the digits of 15 added together equal 6 — the numerological value of Weston.
Baby names with a value of 6
Below you’ll find the most popular 6-names per gender, according to the latest U.S. baby name data. I’ve further sub-categorized them by total sums — just in case any of those larger numbers are significant to anyone.
6
The letters in the following baby names add up to 6.
Girl name (6)
Boy names (6)
Ada
Abba, Baba
6 via 15
The letters in the following baby names add up to 15, which reduces to six (1+5=6).
Girl names (6 via 15)
Boy names (6 via 15)
Aida, Alaa, Adia, An, Ama
Jad, Aadi, Gabe, An, Ej
6 via 24
The letters in the following baby names add up to 24, which reduces to six (2+4=6).
There’s no definitive answer, unfortunately, because various numerological systems exist, and each one has its own interpretation of the number six. That said, if we look at a couple of modern numerology/astrology websites, we see 6 being described as “harmonious,” “loving,” “stable,” “compassionate,” and “responsible.”
We can also look at associations, which are a bit more concrete. Here are some things that are associated with the number 6:
Snowflake (six-fold symmetry)
Beehive (six-sided cells)
Guitar (6 strings)
Football (6 points for a touchdown)
Ice hockey (6 players per side, including the goalie)
Cube (six faces)
Six degrees of separation (the idea that all people are six or fewer social connections away from one other)
What does the number 6 mean to you? What are your strongest associations with the number?
P.S. To see names with other numerological values, check out the posts for the numbers one, two, three, four, five, seven, eight, and nine.
In late 2007, Greenpeace held a competition to name one of the humpback whales it was tracking in the South Pacific Ocean.
After gathering over 11,000 name suggestions from people across the globe, the organization narrowed the field down to 30 contenders:
Aiko
Amal
Anahi
Atticus
Aurora
Babu
Bumi
Cian
Echo
Gana
Humphrey
Jacques
Kaimana
Kigai
Libertad
Madiba
Malaya
Manami
Mira
Mister Splashy Pants
Moya
Nurani
Paikea
Paz
Sedna
Shanti
Suzuki
Talei
Veikko
Yarrindi
When the polls opened, the rule was one vote per person. But things didn’t go as planned.
An anonymous voter in Arizona disabled cookies on his/her computer and was able to cast thousands of votes for Mister Splashy Pants early on.
This attracted the attention of various websites (Digg, Reddit, BoingBoing, Fark, etc.) which led to even more votes for Mister Splashy Pants.
Mister Splashy Pants ended up winning by a landslide, with over 78% of the vote. In second place was Humphrey, with less than 3%.
So let’s play a game — let’s pretend Greenpeace had taken “Mister Splashy Pants” out of the running mid-competition. Out of the 29 remaining names, which one would you have voted for?
P.S. Here’s another memorable name chosen via online poll: Boaty McBoatface.
