The rare name Troylene has appeared in the U.S. baby name data just three times total. It debuted in 1951, then popped up again twice in the 1960s:
1966: unlisted
1965: 5 baby girls named Troylene
1964: unlisted
1963: 13 baby girls named Troylene [peak]
6 born in California
1962: unlisted
[…unlisted…]
1952: unlisted
1951: 5 baby girls named Troylene [debut]
1950: unlisted
The peak usage in 1963 is easy to explain, so we’ll start there.
In the early ’60s, Dallas burlesque dancer “Candy Barr” (birth name: Juanita Dale Slusher) served over three years of a fifteen-year prison sentence for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana. Just after she was released in April of 1963, a few photographs of Candy and her 7-year-old daughter Troylene ran in the newspapers. (Troylene’s father was Candy’s second husband, Troy Phillips.)
…So that explains the ’60s. What about the ’50s?
The reason for the debut is trickier to pinpoint — and there may not be a specific reason at all. (“Troylene” may have emerged organically as a variant of trendy names like Darlene and Charlene.)
That said, I do have two theories:
First, a New Mexico cowgirl named Troylene Boykin (b. 1943). She participated in various kids’ rodeos during the early ’50s, so her name periodically popped up in Southern newspapers starting around 1951. (Sadly, Troylene Boykin died of a heart ailment in 1956.)
Second, a Texas baby named Zanneta Troylene McKnight (b. 1951). Her twin brother, Clifton Troyce McKnight, was born with an “upside down” stomach (congenital diaphragmatic hernia) and required major surgery soon after they were born in mid-November. They were both highlighted in the local news at that time.
It’s interesting to note that most of the 20th-century Troylenes I found records for were born in Texas, and a good number of them had fathers named Troy. The twins’ father was a Troy, for instance.
Here are hundreds of baby names that have a numerological value of “6.”
I’ve sub-categorized them by overall totals, because I think that some of the intermediate numbers could have special significance to people as well.
Within each group, I’ve listed up to ten of the most popular “6” names per gender (according to the current U.S. rankings).
Beneath all the names are some ways you could interpret the numerological value of “6,” including descriptions from two different numerological systems.

What Does “6” Mean?
First, we’ll look at the significance assigned to “6” by two different numerological sources. Second, and more importantly, ask yourself if “6” or any of the intermediate numbers above have any special significance to you.
Numerological Attributes
“6” (the hexad) according to the Pythagoreans:
“They rightly call it ‘reconciliation’: for it weaves together male and female by blending, and not by juxtaposition as the pentad does. And it is plausibly called ‘peace,’ and a much earlier name for it, based on the fact that it organizes things, was ‘universe’: for the universe, like 6, is often seen as composed of opposites in harmony”
“They also called it ‘health’ and ‘anvil’ (as it were, the unwearying one), because it is reasonable to think that the most fundamental triangles of the elements of the universe partake in it, since each triangle is six, if it is divided by three perpendiculars”
“It arises out of the first even and first odd numbers, male and female, as a product and by multiplication; hence it is called ‘androgynous.'”
“It is also called ‘marriage,’ in the strict sense that it arises not by addition, as the pentad does, but by multiplication. Moreover, it is called ‘marriage’ because it is equal to its own parts, and it is the function of marriage to make offspring similar to parents.”
“They also called it…’measurer of time in twos’ because of the distribution of all time, which is accomplished by a hexad of zodiacal signs over the Earth and another under the Earth, or because time, since it has three parts [past, present, future], is assimilated to the triad, and the hexad arises from two threes.”
“It is also called ‘Thaleia’ [etym. Greek, “the plentiful one”] because of its harmonizing different things, and ‘panacea,’ either because of its connection with health…or as it were self-sufficiency, because it has been furnished with parts sufficient for wholeness.”
“6” according to Edgar Cayce:
“Six – the strength of a three, with a helpful influence” (reading 261-14).
“Six being the changes that have been made in the double strength of three” (reading 261-15).
“Six – again makes for the beauty and the symmetrical forces of all numbers, making for strength” (reading 5751-1).
Personal/Cultural Significance
Does “6” — or do any of the other numbers above (e.g., 33, 42, 96, 123) — have any special significance to you?
Think about your own preferences and personal experiences: lucky numbers, birth dates, music, sports, and so on. For example, maybe your favorite book is The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, which highlights the number 42.
Also think about associations you may have picked up from your culture, your religion, or society in general.
If you have any interesting insights about the number 6, or any of the other numbers above, please leave a comment!

Kelly and Troy Mann of Washington are big Seattle Seahawks fans. They’re such big fans, in fact, that they decided to name their baby girl, born earlier this week, Cydnee Leigh 12th Mann.
The “12th man” in football refers to the fans in the stadium during a game. Seattle’s 12th man currently holds the world record for crowd noise at an athletic event.
The Manns said they chose their daughter’s name while watching the NFC Championship game (Seahawks vs. San Francisco 49ers) a couple of weeks ago.
Their two older children, ages 10 and 6, are jealous of Cydnee’s Seahawks–themed middle name, says Kelly. “Now they want 12th as their middle name too.”
Last month, Deon and Evonne Derrico of Las Vegas welcomed quintuplets.
Each of their four older children has a D-name, so they kept with tradition and gave the quints D-names as well:
Deniko (boy)
Dariz (boy)
Deonee (girl)
Daician (girl)
Daiten (girl)
Other name patterns we’ve seen with quints so far are alphabetical names (Anna, Brody, Ciara, David, Ella) and first letters that spell a word (Gabrielle, Riley, Addison, Cooper, Emerson). We’ve also seen two sets of quints without name patterns: the Jones quints (Will, David, Marcie, Seth, Grace) and the Bieber quints (Kate, Samuel, Troy, Auden, Shiloh).
And now some fun questions for you: If you had to name a set of quintuplets, and all the names had to start with the same letter, which letter would you choose? Why? And, what names would you choose? (Let’s say there are 2 boys and 3 girls, just like the Derrico quints.)
American actor Tab Hunter isn’t really named Tab Hunter. His real name is Arthur Gelien. According to Tab’s autobiography, his unique stage name was coined by Hollywood talent agent Henry Willson.*
Exasperated, Henry finally said, “C’mon, we’ve got to tab him something.” He thought…for about two more seconds. “Hey, that’s not bad,” he announced. “Tab.”
As soon as Tab Hunter’s acting career started taking off in the early 1950s, parents began naming their sons Tab:
1962: 44 boys named Tab
1961: 52 boys named Tab
1960: 66 boys named Tab (rank: 937th)
1959: 89 boys named Tab (rank: 813th)
1958: 82 boys named Tab (rank: 831st)
1957: 120 boys named Tab (rank: 698th)
1956: 68 boys named Tab (rank: 907th)
1955: 43 boys named Tab
1954: 13 boys named Tab
1953: 6 boys named Tab [debut]
1952: unlisted
That spike in ’57 can likely be attributed to a song — Tab’s version of “Young Love,” which hit the #1 spot on several different Billboard charts in 1957.
The soft drink TaB was introduced in 1963, but the drink wasn’t named for the actor, and its introduction didn’t seem to affect the usage of Tab as a baby name.
Dozens of babies continued to be named Tab every year until the early ’70s. The name last appeared on the SSA’s baby name list in the ’90s.
*Henry Willson invented snappy names for many of his clients. He turned Robert Mosely into Guy Madison, Roy Fitzgerald into Rock Hudson (inspired by the Rock of Gibraltar and the Hudson River), Francis Durgin into Rory Calhoun, Merle Johnson into Troy Donahue, and redhead Marilyn Louis into Rhonda Fleming (“Fleming sounds like flaming, plays up her hair”).
