How popular is the baby name Bryan in the United States right now? How popular was it historically? Use the popularity graph and data table below to find out! Plus, see all the blog posts that mention the name Bryan.
The graph will take a few moments to load. (Don't worry, it shouldn't take 9 months!) If it's taking too long, try reloading the page.
The name Silver — which regularly appears in the U.S. baby name data these days — first popped up way back in the 1890s, when it suddenly debuted with an impressive 10 baby boys:
If we look at the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) data, we see a similar spike in the number of people named Silver in 1896:
1898: 8 people named Silver
1897: 6 people named Silver
1896: 18 people named Silver
1895: 6 people named Silver
1894: 8 people named Silver
Can you guess the cause?
I’ll give you two hints. First, look what happens to the name Bryan that year:
1898: 57 baby boys named Bryan
1897: 97 baby boys named Bryan
1896: 157 baby boys named Bryan
1895: 27 baby boys named Bryan
1894: 9 baby boys named Bryan
Now check out how the name Jennings peaks a year later:
1898: 28 baby boys named Jennings
1897: 50 baby boys named Jennings
1896: 40 baby boys named Jennings
1895: 9 baby boys named Jennings
1894: 5 baby boys named Jennings
No doubt you’ve pieced it together: 1896 was the year William Jennings Bryan ran for president, and the central issue for Democrats that year was Free Silver.
The U.S. was in the middle of a depression, and Free Silver supporters (the “Silverites”) thought the depression could be alleviated via the coinage of silver.
“For true believers,” the Encyclopedia Britannica states, “silver became the symbol of economic justice for the mass of the American people.”
And those “true believers” were very likely the ones naming their kids Silver back in 1896.
But Bryan’s opponent, William McKinley, was able to convince voters that Free Silver was a bad thing — that the resultant inflation would harm the economy — and won the election.
Wondering what the most popular J-names for baby boys are? How about Q-names?
Below are the 10 most popular boy names for each letter, A through Z. (The parenthetical notations show how the current rankings differ from the 2012 rankings.)
The two new #1 names that emerged in 2013 were Hunter, which replaced Henry, and Thomas, which replaced Tyler.
Every year on Britney Spears’s birthday (December 2) we start another round of the annual Pop Culture Baby Name Game.
What is the Pop Culture Baby Name Game, you ask? Good question! It’s not a “game” really, but more of a group brainstorm. We try to guess which baby names became more popular during the year thanks to pop culture — music, movies, television, sports, politics, current events, products, etc.
I’ve searched for all the 2013 predictions we’ve made so far (in posts & comments) and listed them below. I also threw in a few more possibilities — mostly celebrity baby names. So here’s what we’re starting with:
Wanna play? Tell me in the comments which baby names you think got a boost from pop culture in 2013. Don’t forget to mention the reason.
I’ll post the results of the game after the SSA updates the national baby name data in May. If you don’t want to miss the results post, subscribe to the blog!
Once upon a time, the U.S. Social Security Administration put out annual twin name rankings (that is, rankings of the pairs of baby names given most frequently to sets of U.S. twins).
It all started in 2005 with simple, single-list rankings. Things got more interesting in 2009, when the SSA began splitting the rankings into gender-specific sub-rankings. Then in 2012, nothing. The updates stopped coming.
Now we have seven years’ worth of official twin name data from the U.S. government…and that’s it.
I used to keep these rankings in my directory, but they are so out-of-date now that I think it’s best to archive them in a single blog post, for easy reference. So, without further ado, here are the top baby names for twins born in the United States from 2005 to 2011 (in reverse order):

Observations on the 2009 rankings:
#9 and #44 on the girl-girl list are “Mackenzie, Madison” and “Madison, Mckenzie.”
#15 and #23 on the girl-girl list are both “Gabriella, Isabella.” There was probably supposed to be a spelling difference somewhere, but the SSA had the pairings listed identically.
#8, #9 and #34 on the girl-boy list are “Jayda, Jayden,” “Jada, Jaden” and “Jada, Jayden.”
#10 on the girl-boy list is “Aidan, Nadia” — the only pair of anagram names I’ve spotted on these twin lists (besides Heaven/Nevaeh, of course).
#26 and #27 on the girl-boy list are “Zachary, Zoe” and “Zachary, Zoey.”
